Description

30mm Diameter Chrome Plated Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts are specialised CF53 steel shafts with an induction-hardened outer layer which is then chrome plated, designed for linear motion applications that require corrosion resistance. Often referred to as linear or precision shafts, these components are integral to various mechanical systems. Characterised by their high material quality, surface hardness, and precise dimensions, they provide a robust and wear-resistant solution for linear motion. Whether used as linear shafts with ball bearings and rollers, guide shafts with plain bearings, or in other mechanical applications, these Chrome Plated Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts offer unparalleled performance and longevity.

Key Features

  • Material: Made from CF53 Steel a high-grade carbon steel known for its exceptional strength and resilience. The additional chrome plating offers excellent wear and corrosion resistance.
  • Surface Hardness: The Chrome Plating of the Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts boasts a minimum surface hardness of 800HV0.1, a feature that contributes to their exceptional wear resistance. The steel under the Chrome Plating is induction-hardened to a minimum of 59HRC. This level of hardness not only enhances the shaft’s durability but also ensures consistent performance under demanding conditions, making them suitable for various industrial applications.
  • Diameter Tolerance: Precision engineered with a diameter tolerance of h7 (+0,-0.012 to -0.021mm), these shafts are meticulously crafted to meet exact specifications. This tight tolerance ensures a perfect fit and alignment within mechanical systems, providing smooth operation and reducing the risk of wear and failure.
  • Cut-to-Size: Cut to +/- 0.5mm with manual deburring for a perfect finish, each shaft is tailored to your exact requirements. We charge per millimetre, with no additional cutting fees. This approach provides a cost-effective solution so you receive your Linear Shafts project ready.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of applications, the Chrome Plated Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts are a versatile solution for various mechanical needs. Whether used as linear shafts with ball bearings and rollers, guide shafts with plain bearings, stretch and guide rollers, hinge pins, or other general mechanical applications, these shafts are designed to adapt to diverse requirements with corrosion resistance. Their robust construction and precision engineering make them an ideal choice for industries seeking reliability and flexibility in their components.

Pros and Cons

Use these Chrome Plated Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts where corrosion resistance is required and weight is not a premium. If corrosion resistance is not required use Solid Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts. If weight is a premium use Hollow Hardened Ground Bearing Linear Shafts.

Pros Cons
  • Corrosion Resistance: Chrome plating provides a protective barrier against rust and corrosion. This is especially important for steel rods used in environments where they might be exposed to moisture, chemicals, or other corrosive elements.

Please note this only applies to the outside diameter. The ends will not be chrome plated.

  • Wear Resistance: Chrome plating adds a hard, durable surface layer to the steel rod, which can significantly increase its wear resistance. This is particularly beneficial for rods that are subjected to high friction or abrasive conditions.
  • Reduced Friction: The smooth and polished surface of chrome plating can reduce friction.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Chrome plating gives steel rods a shiny, reflective finish, which can be desirable for aesthetic reasons.
  • Improved Cleanliness: The smooth surface of chrome-plated rods is easier to clean and less likely to accumulate dirt, grime, or other contaminants. The chrome layer is Cr (VI) free this can be important in industries where cleanliness is crucial, such as in food processing or medical applications.
  • Scratching and Damage: A faulty bearing can cause scratches on the chrome plating. Even minor scratches can expose the underlying steel, making it vulnerable to corrosion. Once the chrome plating is compromised, it can lead to accelerated wear of the plating in that area. To avoid these issues, it’s essential to use high-quality bearings that are appropriate for the application and to regularly inspect and maintain both the bearings and the chrome-plated rods.
  • Diameter Tolerance: Our Chrome plated Linear Shafts still have a very good diameter tolerance but it is slightly lower than our non-chrome plated induction hardened shafts: h7 (+0,-0.012 to -0.021mm) vs h6 (+0,-0.008 to -0.013mm)
  • Cost: Chrome-plated shafts cost roughly 20% more than our non-chrome-plated induction hardened shafts.

Application

Linear Shafts are engineered for versatility and reliability, making them suitable for a wide array of industrial applications. These shafts excel in precision environments such as automated machinery, robotics, and CNC machines, where their high surface hardness and tight diameter tolerance ensure smooth and consistent performance. Additionally, they are ideal for use in linear motion systems with ball bearings and rollers, guide shafts with plain bearings, stretch and guide rollers, and hinge pins. Their robust construction and exceptional wear resistance make them a dependable choice for demanding applications in the automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors. Whether for heavy-duty machinery or delicate precision equipment, these linear shafts deliver unparalleled performance and longevity.

Customisations

We offer a broad selection of customisation options for our aluminium extrusions. Read the guidelines below for help choosing the correct customisations for your project.

1.0 – Required Length

Required length is the total length of the linear shaft in millimetres (mm).

A liquid-cooled machine is used to cut the linear shaft. This ensures that the shaft remains cool during the cutting process, preserving the diameter tolerance.

We will manually de-burr the ends of the shaft with a small chamfer.

Please note the linear shafts are delivered with a protective oil coating. This coating is not intended as bearing lubrication. We recommend removing this coating with Isopropyl Alcohol or a similar solvent. After removal, be sure to apply an appropriate bearing grease tailored to your specific application.

If the protective oil coating is removed and the shafts are not greased accordingly, they will become vulnerable to corrosion and rust.
